| Rhetorical question | yes or no question |
| Simile | compare two things that resemble each other in at least one way |
| Metaphor | compare two things not like something else but is saying that it is something else |
| Personification | human characteristics to non-humans |
| understatement | makes something less important than it is |
| hyperbole | emphasis, extreme exaggeration |
| allusion | reference to famous actors, art |
| Alliteration | swiftly and slowly sally sang sunshine |
| Apostrophe | talks to something not real like it is real |
| Paradox | works hard at being lazy |
| Situational irony | total surprise |
| dramatic irony | the reader knew something a character didn't |
| verbal irony | sarcastic |
| tone | authors attitude |
