| foreshadowing | use of clues to prepare the reader for later events |
| exposition | introduced to the events, setting, character's, etc |
| narrative hook | begins a story's problem |
| rising action | related series of incidents |
| climax | highest/most intense level of impact and emotion and interest |
| falling action | occur as a direct result of climax |
| resolution/denouncement | final resolution of elements/events |
| conflict | struggle between 2 opposing forces |
| external conflict | struggle against forces outside main character |
| internal conflict | struggle between forces inside main character |
| dialogue | conversations between 2 or more characters, can be internal |
| characterization | process authors use to develop characters |
| direct characterization | character is revealed by use of descriptive adjectives, phrases, etc |
| indirect characterization | character is revealed through character actions, speech, thoughts, etc. or other characters reactions |
| flat character | uncomplicated; one primary/minor characteristic |
| round/dynamic character | complex; variety of primary characteristics, and other minor ones |
| static character | undergoes no important inner/outer changes |
| dynamic character | does undergo important inner change |
| atmosphere | emotional feeling created (usually by exposition) |
| first person POV | person is speaking about them self ("I") |
| second person POV | "you" (at reader) |
| limited third person POV | narrator that only knows thoughts/feelings of ONE character |
| omniscient third person POV | narrator that knows all |
| theme | controlling idea/central insight of a story |
| stated theme | author states main idea to reader |
| implied theme | author implies main idea to reader through events |
| frame | an overall unifying structure within which one of more tales are related |
| protagonist | main character |
| antagonist | opposed to main character |
