MLA format the Modern Language Association’s standards for the formatting, page layout, and use of citations in a research paper
plagiarism using someone else’s words or ideas without giving proper credit (or giving any credit at all)
source something—such as a database article, magazine, website, person, or book—that provides information for a research paper
cite to identify the origin of any ideas, information, or words that you take from a source
works cited page a list of references to sources used in a paper
in-text (parenthetical) citation a brief mention in the text of your paper (usually at the end of a sentence) that refers to a complete citation on the works cited page at the end of the paper
direct quotation to write, word-for-word, what someone else said or wrote
paraphrase restating an author’s idea in different words, often to share information by making the meaning clear to readers
summarize a brief statement of the main points of a source/part of a source
database a collection of periodicals compiled electronically
secondary source sources made by people who were not directly involved in the event or even present when it occurred
primary source materials created by people who witnessed or took part in the event they supply information about
credibility the quality of being believed or trusted
reliable source a dependable or trustworthy source of information
