simile a figure of speech that makes a comparison between two seemingly unlike things by using a connective word such as like, as, than, or resembles
metaphor a figure of speech that makes a comparison between two seemingly unlike things without using the connective words like, as, than, or resembles
conflict a struggle or clash between opposing characters, forces, or emotions
internal conflict struggle between opposing needs, desires, or emotions within a single character
external conflict character struggles against some outside force: another character, society as a whole, or some natural force
plot series of related events that make up a narrative, such as a story, novel, or epic; the underlying structure of a narrative.
exposition basic situation in a story that introduces the characters, setting, and usually the major conflict
complication minor conflict within the story
climax the point of greatest emotional intensity or suspense in a plot; usually marks the moment toward the end of the plot when the conflict is decided one way or another
resolution denouement; where all the problems or mysteries of the plot are unraveled
point of view the vantage point from which a writer tells a story
first person narrator is a character in the story; uses the pronoun “I”, narrator tells reader his own experiences
third person limited narrator is outside the story, and tells the story from the vantage point of only one character. Narrator goes where this character goes and reveals the character’s thoughts.
third person omniscient “all knowing” point of view; the person telling the story knows everything that’s going on in the story.
symbol a person, place, thing, or event that stands both for itself and for something beyond itself
tragedy a play, novel, or other narrative depicting serious and important events, in which the main character comes to an unhappy end
tragic hero main character of a tragedy that is usually dignified, courageous, and whose downfall is cause by a tragic flaw (error in judgment or character weakness) or from forces beyond his/her control.
soliloquy an act of speaking one's thoughts aloud when by oneself or regardless of any hearers, especially by a character in a play.
aside private words that a character in a play speaks to another character or to the audience that are not supposed to be overheard by others onstage
