| Term | Definition |

| Protagonist | The most important character or the 'good guy'. |
| Antagonist | The one in conflict with the main character or the 'bad guy'. |
| Point of View | The view, or perspective, that the story is being presented. |
| First Person | The narrator is one of the characters from the story. |
| Third Person | The narrator is not one of the characters from the story. |
| Conflict | The struggle, either internal or external, that takes place in the story. |
| Internal Conflict | An internal (or emotional) struggle between what the character wants to do and what he must do. |
| External Conflict | The external problem that stands in the way of what the character is trying to accomplish. |
| Climax | The part when the story reaches its most important point. |
| Rising and Falling Action | Leads up and follows the climax. |
| Rising Action | The main details leading to the climax. |
| Falling Acting | The main details following the climax. |
| Narrative | Text that explains a series of events. |
| Dialogue | A shared conversation between two or more people. |
| Foreshadowing | When the author gives subtle hints of things that might happen later on in the story. |
