| adaptation | any characteristic that helps a plant or animal survive, such as gills for breathing underwater or the spines on a cactus for protection |
| mimicry | when an organism resembles, or looks like, another organism or its surroundings to increase the chances for survival |
| habitat | the place or environment where an organism naturally lives |
| species | group of organisms with similar characteristics that allow them to reproduce |
| survive | to stay alive |
| function | what an organism's parts are used for such as wings for flying, a tail for balance, a long beak for growing nectar |
| migration | seasonal movement of animals from one place to another, such as birds flying south for the winter |
