SCHS Chapter 2
Glencoe Chemistry Chp. 2
Term | Definition |
---|---|
accuracy | refers to how close a measured value is to an accepted value |
base unit | is a defined unit in a system of measurement that is based on an object or event in the physical world. (7) time (second [s]), length( meter [m]), mass (kilogram [kg]), temperature (kelvin [K]), amount of a substance (mole [mol]), electric current 9ampere{A]), luminous intensity (candela ([cd]) |
conversion factor | is a ratio of equivalent values used to express the same quantity of different units and is always equal to 1 |
density | is a ratio that compares the mass of an object to its volume. Units of measurement are grams / cubic centimeters g/cm3 |
derived unit | a unit that is defined by a combination of base units |
dimensional analysis | is a method of problem-solving that focuses on the units used to describe matter. |
graph | is a visual display of data |
kelvin | is the SI base unit of temperature. Freezes at 273 K and boils 373 K |
kilogram | is about 2.2 pounds defined by the platinum-iridium metal cylinder |
liter | amount of liquid in a container . V= one cubic decimeter |
meter | the distance that light travels through a vacuum in 1 / 299,792,458 of a second approx.... 3 inches longer than a yard (39 inches) |
percent error | is the ratio of an error to an accepted value. Percent error= error/ accepted value then times 100 |
precision | refers to how close a series of measurements are to one another |
scientific notation | expresses numbers as a multiple of two factors: number between 1 and 10' and ten raised to a power or exponent. |
second | the frequency of microwave radiation given off by cesium-133 atom is the physical standard used to establish length of a second |
significant figure | include all known digits plus one estimated digit. |
