| Antonym | words with opposite meanings such as dread and excitement |
| Appositive | a noun or noun phrase that gives further detail or explanation of the noun next to it |
| Definition Essay | a type of expository writing that explains what a topic means |
| Function | how something is used in the real world |
| Example | use specific details of the concepts from texts or life |
| Negation | explain what something is by showing what it is not |
| Allegory | a literary technique of extending a metaphor through an entire poem or story so that objects, persons, and actions in the text are equated with meanings that lie outside the text |
| Formal Style | writing that shows care and appropriate language |
| Informal Style | used in texting or conversation |
| Coherence | clear and orderly presentation of ideas in a paragraph or essay |
| Transitions | words or phrases that connect ideas, details or events in writing |
