| anesthesia | a medication used primarily during surgery to minimize pain, discomfort and shock |
| antibodies | cells of the immune system which kill foreign objects in the body |
| artificial insemination | inserting sperm into a female's uterus or cervix in order to achieve pregnancy |
| auscultation | listening with a stethoscope or other instruments |
| autoclave | decontaminates and sterilizes surgical instruments |
| balling gun | administer oral medication capsules or boluses |
| bevel | small hole on the needle which allows the blood to flow into the syringe |
| centrifuge | is used for the separation of fluids by spinning a vessel holding material at a high speed |
| chute | form or restraint used for cattle |
| clinic protocol | is a guideline which is followed by all veterinary staff to ensure safety within the clinic at all times |
| controlled substance | drugs considered to be dangerous due to human abuse or misuse |
| defecation | to have a bowel movement |
| dehydration | loss of water from the body |
| dental prohylaxis | a procedure performed to clean an animal's teeth |
| dissect | to cut apart or separate |
| ECG or EKG (electrocardiography) | records electrical activity of the heart over a period of time |
| embryo transfer | placing embryos into the uterus of a female in order to establish pregnancy |
| fecal flotation | detects internal parasites |
| femoral pulse | pulse found inside the thigh of the hind leg |
| forceps | grasp, cut, compress and pull tissues |
| hydrotherapy | washing a wound with water |
| inflammation | redness, swelling or pain on an area of the body |
| intramuscular (IM) | injection of a substance directly into the muscle |
| intravenous (IV) | injection of a substance directly into the vein |
| jugular | any of the three large veins in the neck |
| lesion | wound which causes pain or a change in the body |
| lethargic | not alert or active |
| ligate | to tie or bind with ligature |
| lymph nodes | are gland masses of tissue which contain cells |
| microscope | are used to analyze blood, fecal, urine, and sperm microscopically |
| multi-dose hypodermic syringe | are used to inject or draw fluids into or out of the body |
| muzzle | guard or strap which is fitted over an animal's nose and jaw to prevent biting |
| neonate | a newborn animal |
| net | used to fractious cats or wild animals |
| occlude | to close, shut, or stop |
| ophthalmoscope | instrument used when examining the eye |
| palpate | to examine by touching and feeling the area |
| pharmacodynamics | is the study of the biochemical and physiological effects of drugs and their actions |
| plasma | liquid portion of the blood |
| platelets | are responsible for clotting and increases with injury |
| preventive drugs | are used to prevent a condition |
| pulse | number of times the heart beats per minute |
| recumbent | laying down on the back or either side |
| red blood cells | carry oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body |
| scissors | cut tissue, sutures and hard material |
| SNAP | quick convenient blood test which detect multiple diseases |
| sub q (subcutaneous) | injection used to inject a drug into the tissue layer between the skin and the muscle |
| submissive | passive, obedient or conforming behavior |
| syringe barrel | part of the syringe which holds the medicine |
| tartar | plaque build up on teeth |
| therapeutic drug | are used in the treatment of a condition |
| twitch | device used to distract horses during exams or procedures |
| urinalysis | gives information on kidney function and detects urinary tract infections |
| vital signs | respiration, pulse and temperature |
| white blood cells | defends the body from invading organisms |
| zoonotic | disease which are communicable between humans and animals |
