| food chain | the sequence of who eats whom in an ecosystem |
| food web | the network of all the inter-related food chains in an ecosystem |
| autotroph | an organism that makes its food by photosynthesis |
| heterotroph | an organism that gets its energy by eating other organisms |
| carnivore | an organism that eats meat or other animals |
| herbivore | an organism that only eats plants or producers |
| primary consumer | a meat-eater (consumer) that eats autotrophs (producers) |
| secondary consumer | a meat-eater that eats primary consumers |
| tertiary consumer(3rd level) | a meat-eater that eats secondary consumers |
| quaternary consumer(4th level) | a meat-eater that eats tertiary consumers |
