| Microorganism | A small, living organism that is not visible to the naked eye |
| Pathogens | Microorganisms that cause infection and disease |
| Nonpathogens | Microorganisms that are part of plant life and the human body that lives in a specific environment of the body. It is beneficial. |
| Aerobic | Requires Oxygen to live |
| Anaerobic | Live and reproduce in the absence of Oxygen |
| Bacteria | Cocci, Bacilli, and Spirilla |
| Protozoa | One cell animal-like organism Ex. Malaria |
| Fungi | Plantlike organisms that live on dead organic matter. Ex. Yeast and mold |
| Rickettsiae | Parasitic microorganisms that cannot live outside the cells of another living organism |
| Viruses | Smallest microorganisms. They cannot reproduce unless they are inside another cell. Ex. Herpes, Common cold |
| Endogenous | Infection or disease originates within the body |
| Exogenous | Infection or disease originates outside the body |
| Sterile | Free from all pathogens and nonpathogens, including spores and viruses |
| Contaminated | Organisms and pathogens are present |
| Antisepsis | Prevent or inhibit growth of pathogenic organisms but are not effective against spores and viruses |
| Disinfection | This is the process that kills and destroys pathogenic organisms |
| Sterelization | This is a process that destroys all microorganisms, both pathogenic and nonpathogenic |
| Bioterrorism | The use of microorganisms, or biologic agents, as weapons to infect humans, animals, or plants |
| Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) | Gloves, gowns, lab coats, masks, and face shields |
| Autoclave | A piece of equipment that uses steam under pressure or gas to sterilize equipment and supplies |
