Hardware Safetying
Requirements for safetying aircraft hardware
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is the basic principle of safety wiring? | Should be installed so as to tighten the nut or bolt |
| What is the rule regarding changing torque on a bolt for the purpose of aligning a nut with the cotter key hole? | use a shim washer under the nut and retorque |
| What size brass safety wire would be proper to use to safety a turnbuckle for a 1/8" cable using the double-wrap method? | 0.040 brass |
| How many turns of safety wire should be wrapped around the shank of a turnbuckle to terminate the safetying? | At least 4 wraps |
| What is the purpose of a turnbuckle in a control system? | to make tension adjustments on cable controlled systems |
| How is the end of a turnbuckle barrel with left-hand threads identified? | A grove or knurl is usually on the end of the barrel having left-hand thread |
| How do you determine that turnbuckle ends are screwed into the barrel a sufficient depth? | No more than three threads may be exposed on either barrel |
| What are the four methods for safetying turnbuckles? | single wrap, single wrap spiral, double wrap, double wrap spiral |
| What type of safety wire is used for safety-of-flight emergency devices? | copper or brass 0.020 inch diameter safety wire |
| What are the two methods of safety wiring aircraft hardware? | Double-twist method (most common) and single-wire method (for closely spaced geometric patterns) |
| How should the final loops of safety wire, the pigtail, be formed? | Leave at least four to six complete turns (1/2 to 5/8 in long) |
| What is the requirement for selection of a cotter pin? | use the largest size that will fit consistent with the diameter of the cotter pin hole and/or the slots in the nut. |
| What are the standard sizes of safety wire for aircraft hardware? | 0.025, 0.032, and 0.041 |
| How is the required size of a turnbuckle clip determined ? | Reference the locking clip table in AC43.13-1B to find the clip size relate to the cable diameter |
| What is the preferred method of installing cotter pins? | one prong should be bent up over the shank without going past the shank diameter, the other prong should be bent down filling the slot in the nut without touching the washer |
| What tools can should be used to install safety wire? | diagonal cutting pliers, duckbill pliers, or safety wire pliers |
| What is the restriction for the use of self-locking hardware | Self-locking hardware is not to be used for installations subject to rotation where the nut can become loose. |
