| Metaphor | Figures of speech that use comparisons, but do not use "as" or "like"; a metaphor modifies a verb or noun by inferring that it is similar to the quality of something else. |
| Idiom | Phrases or a group of words that are much like a single word: the phrase or group of words mean something different than the individual words imply. |
| Oxymorons | A pair of two terms that seemingly have opposite or contradictory meaning: non-compatible meaning. |
| Simile | It is the use of "like" or "as" in a phrase, and whole phrase must be read as if it were one word (use of "as" similes are either an adjective that modifies a noun or it functions as an adverb modifying a verb ). |
| Onomatopoeia | Words that represent a sound or animal noise; many times the word is the sound that it makes. |
