Dermatology Benign Skin Lesions

This is a benign skin lesion that in appearance can look just like melanoma Seborrheic Keratosis. Hereditary and usually occur after 30's. Tx not necessary unless symptomatic
Skin tags are aka Acrochordon. Usually appear after 30's. Asymptomatic lesions require no treatment
Where do Achrochordon's occur? Occur in the axilla, neck, groin, eyelids, antecubital and popliteal fossae, inframammary folds especially in large-breasted women, beltline, and other areas where friction occurs. More common in obese and in women
Very common, benign, firm dermal papule Dermatofibroma
_____ is associated with a "dimple sign" or "button sign" Dermatofibroma. A tiny button of scar tissue. Lesions arise spontaneously or secondary to insect bites or trauma when shaving legs.
Fatty tumors aka lipoma. Subcutaneous. Lesions are mobile and feel rubbery. Familial types, more common in areas of trauma.
These lesions are filled with keratin and when ruptured or manually expressed, it has a cheesy consistency and a nasty odor. Epidermal Cyst
Epidermal Cysts are most commonly found in Hair bearing areas, but may occur anywhere. Treatment is not indicated unless symptomatic or located on the face. Tx is ID or excision. Sometimes has a visible opening.
Very common, benign, lesions composed of organized clusters of melanocyte-derived nevus cells. Nevi
Most ________nevi are on the palms, soles, genitals, and mucosa are of this type, but they may occur anywhere. Junctional
Nevi that are darker and more elevated than Junction nevi, also found more commonly on the face, scalp and trunk are Compound Nevi
This Nevi looks like a gross cluster of pink little bubbles Intradermal Nevus. mainly appear during or after adolescence
Benign, blue, gray, or black macules or papules. Blue Nevi. Located deeper within the dermis
Etiology of Halo Nevus Autoimmune phenomena. A preexisting nevus of any type which is surrounded by a rim of depigmentation. Perform a complete skin exam as this phenomenon may occur in vitiligo and in malignant melanoma
These nevi are common in kids, rapid growth, and occurs most common on face, scalp, neck and legs Spitz Nevus
Approach to Spitz Nevus Excision is recommended since melanoma has been reported to arise in Spitz nevi, albeit rarely. This is an ongoing controversy.
This Nevi looks like a chocolate chip cookie. Appear in childhood, are benign, and persist Nevus Spilus; congenital. No tx necessary
____ is a lesion that is not a true nevus, more common in men, associated with a path of hair Becker's Nevus. No Tx; patients may shave it.
Congenital Melanocytic Nevus Tx Present at birth or during infancy. Increased risk of malignant melanoma in lesions larger than 20 cm.Many dermatologists recommend excision after puberty. Usually dark brown and raise; may have a verrucous surface
Freckles AKA Ephilides. Benign, 1-2 mm, well-defined, red, tan, or brown-colored macules. Autosomal dominant inheritance
Lentigo (pl. lentingines) AKA: age spots, liver spots, wisdom spots.
Common and benign enlargement of the sebaceous (oil) glands on the face. Sebaceous Hyperplasia. 1-3 mm flesh-colored or yellow slightly elevated papules which may have a central umbilication or a “donut” appearance. May have telangectasia and are frequently confused wtih BCC
Ectopically located sebaceous glands. Fordyce Spots. Benign, no tx.
Extremely common, benign proliferation of dilated superficial capillaries. Cherry Angioma. Do not blanch with diascopy, but they are vascular.
Common, single or multiple, soft, usually compressible, dark blue to purple-colored, 2-10 mm papule seen on sun-exposed skin.Most common on the lower lip, followed by the ears, but almost always on the face. Venous Lake. No Tx
Common, benign, dilatation of superficial bleed vessels with a distinctive appearance.Composed of an arteriole (body) perpendicular to the skin and multiple radiating capillaries (legs) oriented parallel to the skin surface. Spider Angioma. Most commonly on face and hands.
Normal Variants Accessory or Supernumery nipples, Accessory Tragus, Accessory Digits, Supernumery Teeth
Sign of Leser-Trelat Sudden eruption of many seborrheic keratoses may be a cutaneous sign of internal malignancy
Stucco Keratosis and Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra are forms of seborrheic keratosis
