TermDefinition
Epic A long narrative in a story or poem, about a hero who symbolizes the values of a cultural group
Epic Hero Central character in an epic. The epic hero's story involves a quest to be completed or a challenge to be overcome. This quest or challenge is usually represented as a journey.
Assonance When the short or long vowel sounds are repeated anywhere in words that are close together.
Consonance When the consonant sounds are repeated anywhere in words that are close together
Hero's Journey The quest or challenge undertaken by an epic hero. The hero faces challenges and trials; overcomes despair and/or death; and returns with power to transform his ordinary world.
Ordinary World The beginning and end of the hero's journey
Call to Adventure The hero receives a calling, a challenge, or a quest, and begins his adventure.
Assistance The hero encounters a person, object, or even a supernatural force that will aid him in his task.
First Trial and Victory The hero faces his first trial. His victory is relatively easy, and his confidence increases.
Approach or Preparation The hero learns that he must face a much more difficult task that may seem beyond his ability.
Ordeal or Great Trial The hero despairs; he may even die; but he returns from despair or death and wins the victory.
Reward The hero receives a reward, which may be riches but is more often new strength or power.
Return Home The hero returns to the ordinary world, but he has changed. His new strength and wisdom enable him to transform his ordinary world into something better.
Alliteration The beginning sounds of words are repeated in a line of poetry or a sentence; the repetition of sounds in words that are close together in a line of poetry or a sentence
Symbol Something, usually a physical object, that represents something else, such as an idea or quality
Symbolism The use of symbols to express ideas or qualities in writing, art, or music
Oral Tradition How a group of people without written language pass down history, beliefs, and traditions that are important to their culture to future generations
Mnemonic Device A strategy used to help people remember something
Hero's Journey: Stages Stage 1 (Departure): Ordinary World, Call to Adventure, Assistance. Stage 2 (Initiation): First Trial and Victory, Approach or Preparation, Ordeal or Great Trial. Stage 3 (Return): Reward, Return Home, Ordinary World.
