Math Vocabulary

Words & Definitions

TermDefinition
Identity An equation that is true for all values of the variable.
Distributive Property A property that can be used to find the product of a number and a sum or difference.
Like Terms Terms that have the same variable parts. Constant terms are also like terms.
Equivalent Equations Equations that have the same solutions.
Inverse Operations Two operations that undo each other.
Formula An equation that relates two or more quantities.
Reciprocal An expression or function so related to another that their product is one.
Variable A letter that is used to represent one or more numbers.
Algebraic Expressions An expression that includes at least one variable. Also called variable expressions.
Power An Expression that represents repeated multiplication of the same factor.
Exponent The number or variable that represents the number of times the base of a power is used as a factor.
Base Of A Power The number or expression that is used as a factor in a repeated multiplication.
Open Sentence An equation or an equality that contains an algebraic expressions.
Equation A mathematical sentence formed by placing the symbol = between two expressions.
Inequality A mathematical sentence formed by placing on of the symbols <, >, And the ones with equals.
