| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Chemistry | The study of the composition, structure, and properties of matter and the changes that matter undergoes. |
| Chemical | Any substance that has a definite composition or is used or produced in a chemical. |
| Mass | A measure of amount of matter in an object |
| Atom | The smallest unit of an element that maintains the chemical properties of that element |
| Element | Composed of one kind of atom which cannot be separated or broken down into simpler substances by chemical means. |
| Compound | Substance made from the atoms of 2 or more elements chemically bonded. |
| Extensive Property | A property that depends not the extent or size of a system. |
| Intensive Property | A property that does not depend on the amount of matter present, such as pressure, temperature, or density. |
| Physical Property | A characteristic of a substance that does not involve a chemical change, such as density, color, or hardness. |
| Physical Change | A change of matter from one form to another without a change in chemical. |
| Change of State | The change of a substance from one physical state to another. |
| Liquid | A type of biochemical that does not dissolve in water, including fats and steroids; liquids store energy and make up cell membranes. (definite volume and indefinite shape) |
| Solid | The state of matter in which and shape of a substance are fixed. (definite volume and shape) |
| Gas | A form of matter that does not have a definite volume or shape. |
| Plasma | High temperature physical state of matter in which atoms move most of there electrons, particles that make up atoms. |
| Chemical Property | Relates to a substance's ability to undergo changes that transform it into different substances |
| Chemical Change/Reaction | A change in which one or more substances are converted into different substances. |
| Reactants | The substances that react in a chemical change. |
| Products | The substances that are formed by the chemical change. |
| Groups/Families | The vertical columns of the periodic table. |
| Periods | The horizontal rows of elements in the periodic table. |
| Metal | An element that is a good electrical conductor and a good heat conductor. |
| Nonmetal | An element that is a poor conductor of heat and electricity. |
| Metalloid | An element that has some characteristics of metals and some characteristics of nonmetals. |
