| data | list of observed values for a variable |
| population | entire group to be studied |
| individual | member of the population |
| sample | subset of population to be studied |
| descriptive statistics | numerical description of data, no conclusions drawn |
| inferential statistics | use results from sample, extends to population and measure reliability |
| parameter | numerical summary of population |
| variables | characteristics of the individuals within a population |
| qualitative variables | classification based on attribute or characteristic |
| quantitative variables | numerical measures, adding and subtracting gives meaningful results |
| discrete variable | quantitative variable that has a finite, countable number of possible values |
| continuous variable | quantitative variable that has an infinite number of possible values |
