slam poetry
| Term | Definition |

| subject | the subject on the poem on a surface level. The actual event, situation or experience being described. |
| Context | the setting, geographical location, time period and historical or other social issues that have influenced the poet. |
| structure | the way a poem is organised in terms of stanzas, number of lines and and interesting features, |
| Emotive Language | is used to create powerful feelings in the reader. eg. rage, rage, against the dying light. |
| Repetition | is used to reinforce the language, message or theme. |
| onomatopoeia | words that sound like the noise they describe. eg. snap, swish, smack |
| Metaphor | A comparison of two unlike things, saying that one thing is the other. eg. the soldier is a lion in battle. |
