Poetry Techniques

Descriptions of poetry techniques to help you learn and remember definitions.

TermDefinition
Rhyme Repetition of the same/similar sounds. Normally used at the end of of a verse.
Hyperbole The technique of exaggerating things
Onomatopeia Words that describe the sound. Eg, bang, splat, ring.
Simile When 2 words are used to compare something, using words such like or as.
Imagery Using language techniques to help describe the situation they are in. Such as feels, sounds, etc.
Personification The act of using human characteristics on a non human object.
Mood/tone The general feeling that is created throughout the poem.
Repetition The same words used to enforce the message and feeling.
Metaphor A comparison between two different things.
Context What the poem is about.
