Computer Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |

| CPU | Internal operating unit or "brain" of the computer. |
| Disk Drive | Reads data from and writes data to a disk. |
| Monitor | Displays text and graphics on the screen. |
| Mouse | Used to enter comands. |
| Keyboard | An arrangement of letter, figure, symbol, control, function and editing keys and a numeric keypad used to enter data. |
| Alphanumeric keys | Keys used to enter letters, numbers, and symbols. |
| Numeric keypad | Keys at the right side of the keyboard used to enter numeric copy and to perform calculation. |
| Function F Keys | Used to execute commands, sometimes with other keys. Commands vary with soft ware |
| Arrow keys | Move insertion point left, right, up, and down. |
| ESC (Escape) | Closes a software menu or dialog box. |
| TAB | Moves the insertion point to a preset position. |
| CAPS LOCK | Used to make all capital letters. |
| SHIFT | Makes capital letters and symbols shown at tops of # keys. |
| CTRL (Control) | With other keys, executes commands. Commands vary with software. |
| ALT (Alternate) | With other keys, executes commands. Commands vary with software. |
| Space Bar | Inserts a space in text. |
| ENTER/RETURN | Moves insertion point to margin and down to the next line.Also used to execute commands |
| DEL (DELETE) | Removes text to the right of insertion point. |
| NUM LOCK | Activates/deactivates numeric keypad. |
| INSERT | Activates insert of typeover. |
| BACKSPACE | Deletes the text left of the insertion point. |
| COMMAND (MAC keyboards only) | With another key, executes commands that may vary with software. |
