| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Avogadro's Number | 6.02x10(23) - the number of atoms or molecules in 1 mol. |
| Electron Affinity | The energy needed to remove an electron from a negative ion to form a neutral atom or molecule. |
| Electron Configuration | The arrangement of electrons in an atom. |
| Electromagnetic Spectrum | All of the frequencies or wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation. |
| Electro-negativity | A measure of the ability of an atom in a chemical compound to attract electrons. |
| Excited State | A state in which an atom has more energy than it does at its ground state. (Absorbs energy) |
| Ground state | A state in which an atom has less energy than it does at its excited state. (releases energy) |
| Hund's Rule | The rule that states that for an atom of ground state, the number of unpaired electrons is the maximum possible and these unpaired electrons have the same spin. |
| Orbital | A region in the atom where there is a high probability of finding electrons. |
| Ionization Energy | The energy required to remove an electron from an ion or atom. |
