| Chiasmus | Arrangement of repeated thoughts of XYYX. Chiasmus is often short and summarizes a main idea, e.g., "ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country" |
| metaphor | a comparison without using like or as " Talent is a cistern; genius is a fountain"/ "his fist was a knotty hammer"/ " But O beware the middle mind that purrs and never shows a tooth" |
| Irony | Generally speaking Irony is a discrepency between expectation and reality |
| Epiphany | a major moment of a characters realization or awareness |
| Biblical | refering in some way to the bible |
| in medias res | in or into the middle of a narrative or plot |
| juxtaposition | to place (different things) together in order to create an interesting effect or to show how they are the same or different |
| ellipsis | the act of leaving out one or more words that are not necessary for a phrase to be understood |
| symbol | a thing or an even that represents or stands for some idea or event. e.g. the cross of christianity and the cresent star for islam |
| understatement | dilliberatly representing something as much less than it acctually is e.g. last week i saw a woman flayed, and you will hardly believe how much it altered her appearence |
| pathos | qualities of a work taht evoke sorrow or pitty. over emotionalism is a result of pathos |
| anaphora | Repitition of a word, phrase or clause at the beginning of two or more sentences in a row. This device is a deliberate form of repetition and helps make the writer's point more coherent. |
| didactic | teaches a lesson or moral or provides a model of a correct way of thinking |
| ethos | the guiding beliefs of a person, group, or organization |
| imagery | the use of images especially in a pattern to create a strong sense of unified sensory impression |
| motif | something (such as an important idea or subject) that is repeated throughout a book, story, etc |
| metonymy | designating one thing for something closely related such as calling the head a CHAIR, a king the CROWN, the newspaper the PRESS |
| non sequitur | inference or conclusion that does not follow the train of thought or evidence |
| onomatoeia | words that are sounds such as buzz or hiss |
| antithesis | a balancing of two opposite or contrasting words, phrases, or clauses. |
