| personification | a comparison in which a non-human is given human qualities |
| rhyme | repetition of similar vowel sounds close together in a poem |
| end rhyme | similar sounds at the conclusion of a line of poetry |
| internal rhyme | similar sounds within a line of poetry |
| rhyme scheme | the pattern of same sounding words in a poem |
| rhythm | the beat of a poem |
| simile | comparison of two unlike things using words such as like, as, than, and resembles |
| speaker | the voice of the poem |
| symbol | an object/person/event that takes on a larger meaning |
| tone | attitude the author puts into a piece of writing |
| archetype | the ultimate example or stereotyped version of a person |
| mood | the feeling the readers get from a piece of literature |
| repetition | a phrase or words is used over and over again for emphasis |
