Definitions and Facts from the NSW Year 7 Decimals and Fractions Topic

denominator The number at the bottom in a fraction
improper fraction A fraction in which the numerator is larger than or equal to the denominator
mixed numeral A number made up of a whole number and a fraction
numerator The number at the top in a fraction
reciprocal The fraction turned upside down
Simplify (a fraction) To reduce the numerator and the denominator of a fraction to their lowest form by dividing them by the same number
equivalent fraction Two or more fractions that represent the same amount.
decimal A number that uses a decimal point and digits to represent tenths, hundredths, and etc.
vinculum A horizontal line used in a fraction to separate the numerator and denominator
decimal places The places after the decimal point in a number
recurring decimal A decimal that has one or more digits that repeat endlessly
round To write a number to a certain number of places
terminating decimal A decimal that is not recurring but comes to an end
