| Equation | Two expressions that are set equal to each other. |
| Algebraic Expression | An expression that consists of numbers, operations, and variables. |
| Inverse Operations | Operations that are opposites because they "undo" one another. |
| Properties of Equality | Properties that state that adding, subtracting, multiplying, or dividing the same number to both sides of an equation creates an equivalent equation. |
| Solution Set | All values for a variable that would make an inequality true. |
| Verbal Expression | An expression that is given solely in words. |
| Constant | The term in an expression that does not have a variable part. |
| Like Terms | Terms that have identical variable parts that are raised to the same power. |
| Combining Like Terms | The process of adding together the coefficients of terms with identical variable parts. |
| Factoring | The process of dividing out a common factor from the terms of an expression. |
| Coefficient | A numeric value that is multiplied by a variable. |
| Variable | A symbol, usually a lower case letter, used to represent an unknown value or a value that changes. |
| Numeric Expression | An expression that consists of entirely of numbers and operations. |
| Solution | The value of a variable that makes an equation true. |
| Equivalent Equations | Equations that have the same solution. |
| Distributive Property | The property that states that a number being multiplied by a sum is equivalent to the sum of the products of the addends and the number. |
| Terms | The parts of an expression that are being added together. |
| Inequality | Two expressions that are being compared and are not necessarily equal to each other. |
