albinism inherited condition present at birth, characterized by a lack of pigment that normally gives color to the skin, hair, and eyes
atopic inherited tendencies to hypersensitivities
autoinoculation the spread of an infection by fingers from one site to a second site on the body
denuded stripping of the skin, leaving bare
excoriations an abrasion or injury to the skin
keratin a scleroprotein that is the principal constituent of epidermis, hair, nails, horny tissues, and the organic matrix of the enamel of the teeth
larvae an independent, immature stage in the life cycle of an animal, in which it is markedly unlike the parent and must undergo changes in form and size to reach the adult stage
lichenification hardening and thickening of the skin; leather like
sebum the oily secretion of the sebaceous glands, whose ducts open into the hair follicles
abcess localized pocket of infection or purulent exudate surrounded by inflammation
eosinophilia accumulation of an abnormally large amount of eosinophils in the blood
macules discolored skin lesion that is not elevated
pruritis itching sensation
urticaria (hives) Type I hypersensitivity reaction affecting the skin
atopic dermatitis (eczema) chronic inflammation of the skin from a response to allergens
psoriasis chronic inflammation of the skin resulting from abnormal activation of T cells
scleroderma deposition of collagen affecting skin or viscera
cellulitis (erysipelas) infection of the dermis and subcutaneous tissue
furuncles (boil) infection that begins in a hair follicle and spreads to surrounding dermis
impetigo highly infectious childhood skin infection
acute necrotizing fasciitis (flesh eating disease) skin infection characterized by extremely rapid tissue invasion resulting from decreased blood supply to tissues and secretion of tissue destroying enzymes
herpes simplex type I most common cause of cold sores or fever blisters on the lip
verrucae (warts) abnormal growths caused by the human papilloma virus
tinea fungal infections
scabies skin infection that results from a mite
pediculosis infection by a louse
pemphigus autoimmune disorder affecting cohesion between skin cells
Urticaria (hives) caused by a type I hypersensitivity reaction
atopic dermatitis (eczema) eosinophelia and elevated IgE levels indicate an allergic response
psoriasis caused by abnormal activation of T cells
scleroderma caused by collagen deposits in arteries and capillaries reduces blood flow to the skin or other organs
cellulitis (erysipelas) caused by infection of the skin and underlying tissues by staph aureas or streptococcus
furuncles (boils) caused by infection of hair follicle by staph aureus
impetigo caused by infection by staph aureus or group A Beta hemolytic strep
acute necrotizing fasciitis caused by infection by group A Beta hemolytic strep
Herpes simplex caused by a viral infection
verrucae (warts) caused by human papilloma virus strains I to IV
tinea infections caused by superficial fungal infections of the skin
scabies caused by invasion of the skin by a mite
pemphigus vulgaris caused by an autoimmune disorder affecting layers of the skin
Urticaria Symptoms include hard, raised, arithmetis lesions on the skin, and is highly puritic
Eczema Symptoms include red, itchy puritic lesions
Psoriasis Symptoms include excessive proliferation of correct karatocytes, red patches of skin covered with silvery scales
Scleroderma Symptoms include hard shiny immovable areas of skin, loss of some movement in the face and eyes. May also affect the organs
Cellulitis Symptoms include reddened areas especially on the lower extremities which are edematous and painful
Furuncles Symptoms include a firm, red painful nodule which begins in a hair follicle. Abcess produces large amount of purulent exodate
Impetigo Symptoms include Itchy small red vessels with yellowish Brown exudate crusty lesions with honey colored exudate
Acute necrotizing fasciitis Symptoms include Inflamed painful gangrene, fever, takkartia and hypotential
Herpes simplex type I Symptoms include burning and tingling along the nerve route followed by painful vehicles which rupture and crust
Verrucae Symptoms include a solid raised lesion papule that may be painful if pressure is applied
Tinea Round erhythematus ring of vessels or papules with a clear center (ringworm)
Scabies Symptoms include light Brown lines often with vesicles, errythema, inflammation and puritis
Pediculosis Symptoms include itchy macules, excoriations and presence of nits
Pemphigus vulgarris Symptoms include blisters in the mouth, blisters on the skin, possible breathing difficulty due to swelling in the mouth and throat
