Fractions, Shapes, and Concepts

numerator | the top number in a fraction; tells how many are shaded |
denominator | the bottom number in a fraction; tells how many (in all) |
fraction | A number that names part of a whole or a part of a group |
set (group) | a whole unit that can be divided into parts, which are fractions of the whole |
whole | the complete thing; all of the parts |
half | 1 out of 2 parts |
equal parts | parts that are divided and are the same |
plane shapes | shapes that have no thickness |
square | a rectangle with 4 sides of equal length |
rectangle | a closed plane shape with 4 sides and 4 right angles |
triangle | a closed plane shape with 3 sides and 3 angles |
hexagon | a closed plane shape with 6 sides and 6 angles |
trapezoid | a 4-sided plane shape with 2 sides parallel and 2 sides not parallel |
parallel | like train tracks; the lines never touch or cross |
pentagon | a 5-sided plane shape |
parallelogram | a 4-sided plane shape with opposite sides that are parallel and equal in length |
side | straight part of a shape |
angle | the place where two or more edges meet |
right angle | a special angle that forms a square |
vertex | the place where 2 or more edges meet (starts with "v") |
quadrilateral | name for all shapes with 4 sides |
acute angle | an angle that is less than a right angle |
obtuse angle | an angle that is greater than a right angle |
solid shapes | 3-dimensional shapes (have width, length, height) |
rectangular prism | 3-d shape with 6 rectangular faces and 12 edges |
sphere | 3-d shape with 0 flat faces |
cone | 3-d shape with a flat round base |
cylinder | 3-d shape with circle faces at each end |
cube | 3-d shape with 6 square faces and 12 edges |
face | flat surface of a 3-d shape |
edge | line segment formed where 2 faces of a 3-d shape meet |
