apoptosis normal programmed cell death in tissues
autopsy an examination of all or part of a body, including organs, after death to determine the cause of illness or death
biopsy the removal of a small piece of tissue for microscopic examination to determine a diagnosis
endogenous originating from within the body
exogenous originating from outside the body
gangrene necrotic tissue infected by bacteria
homeostasis a relatively stable or constant environment in the body, including blood pressure, temperature and pH, maintained by the various control mechanisms
hypoxia a decrease or insufficient level of oxygen in the tissues
iatrogenic caused by a treatment, procedure or error

microorganisms very small living organism, not visible to the naked eye, usually single celled
microscopic visible only when magnified by lenses in a microscope
morphologic the physical size, form, structure and shape of cells or organs
probability the likelihood or chance of an occurance

prodromal time in the early development of the disease when one is aware of vague changes but the signs are not specific
manifestations clinical evidence or effects, the signs and symptoms of a disease
signs objective indicators of a disease
symptoms subjective feelings
prognosis probability of recovery or other outcomes
latent stage silent stage in which no clinical signs are evident
mortality number of deaths resulting from a particular disease
morbidity disease rates within a group
chronic condition that develops gradually but persists for a long time
acute short term illness that develops very quickly with marked signs
syndrome collection of signs and symptoms occurring together in response to a certain condition
exacerbation time in the course of a disease in which the signs increase
anaplasia cells that are undifferentiated with variable nuclear and cellular structures and numerous mitotic features
prophylaxis a measure or drug designed to prevent a disease
necrosis death or destruction of tissue
pyroptosis type of apoptosis that results in lysis of a cell that releases enzymes that damage nearby cells
liquification necrosis cell death where cells liquify due to release of enzymes from damaged cells
coagulation necrosis cells proteins are denatured by necrosis but retain their shape
fat necrosis fatty tissue is broken down into fatty acids by enzymes
caseous necrosis type of coagulation necrosis which a cheesy substance is produced

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
