| exacerbation | time in the course of a disease in which the signs increase |
| anaplasia | cells that are undifferentiated with variable nuclear and cellular structures and numerous mitotic features |
| prophylaxis | a measure or drug designed to prevent a disease |
| necrosis | death or destruction of tissue |
| pyroptosis | type of apoptosis that results in lysis of a cell that releases enzymes that damage nearby cells |
| liquification necrosis | cell death where cells liquify due to release of enzymes from damaged cells |
| coagulation necrosis | cells proteins are denatured by necrosis but retain their shape |
| fat necrosis | fatty tissue is broken down into fatty acids by enzymes |
| caseous necrosis | type of coagulation necrosis which a cheesy substance is produced |
| infarction | area of dead cells that result when tissues do not receive oxygen |
| subclinical | pathologic changes occur but the patient exhibits no obvious manifestations |
