What has changed overnight? Twelves are no longer considered children; they begin their training; license plates on bicycles are changed to indicate their new status.
What will Jonas’s position as Receiver of Memory involve? He will receive all of the memories of the past generations.
Why is it important to save memories? To know what happened in past generations.
Why does the receiver have books but no one else more than three? What three books do most dwellings have? He’s the Receiver of Memory. He needs to books because they contain information about the past. Most families have the following three books: Book of Rules, dictionary and the Community volume
How will the old receiver transmit the memory of snow to Jonas? The old receiver transmits the memories by placing his hands on Jonas’s bare back.
Once Jonas receives the memory of snow and sledding, how does he feel? Jonas felt surprised and the current Receiver felt some weight had lifted.
Just how does the Receiver of Memories’ training proceed? The old receiver puts his hands on Jonas’s bare back. Then Jonas starts to experience whatever memory that he old receiver is transmitting to Jonas.
How are The Giver’s burdens lessened in working with Jonas? He is moving memories from himself to Jonas.
What other memories are transmitted on his first day of training? The memories of sunshine and Sunburn (was the first painful memory transmitted to Jonas).
Why did the book’s world eliminate sunshine and hills? They eliminated sunshine because it messed up the growing of crops. They eliminated hills because the hills made it difficult to transport goods.
What is Jonas’s first lie? That he didn’t have any dreams. He lied by omission.
What feeling does he get during the dream? He feels there is something in the distance that he needs to reach.
What are the two reasons that Jonas doesn’t tell his friends about his training? 1) It’s in the rules. 2) There is no way for him to describe what he experienced.
How do they discipline the old? With a discipline wand.
How has The Giver changed in one day? He is more energetic and slightly renewed. Giving away some memories have already lightened his load.
What is Jonas seeing in Fiona’s hair, the apple, and the sled? He realizes that he is seeing the color red.
What is different about people’s flesh? The skin has red tones in it.
Why don’t people in the book perceive colors? The people have bred to be color blind.
What is Jonas’s opinion on giving up colors? How do you feel about the matter? He feels that colors should not have been given up.
What memory did The Giver give Jonas? The rainbow.
What is not fair to Jonas? There is no color.
What does Jonas want people to have? Why is this not safe? Choices – It is not safe because people might make the wrong choice.
What does Jonas find himself getting upset over? His group mates are satisfied with their lives and he is angry that he can’t change it.
What about the memory of the elephant upsets Jonas? The cry that shows the grief and anger of the elephant.
What does Jonas keep trying to do? He keeps trying to give people memories and keep color. He tries to convince Lily that elephants were once real, but she doesn’t believe him.
What happens to adults that no longer have young children? They move to the House of Childless Adults.
What is the most frustrating rule for Jonas to obey? That he is not able to discuss his training.
What does The Giver share of his personal family life? The Giver had a spouse and he had to hide his life from her.
What kind of life has the committee of elders chosen? Orderly, predictable, painless
What happened to the failed receiver’s memories? The memories went back to the members of the community; it caused chaos among the people.
What does Jonas ask The Receiver to give him? Why? Jonas asks the Receiver to give him pain because he wants to relieve his pain.
What are your feelings about the book’s way of life? Your opinion
What memory does Jonas receive at the beginning? How does he feel immediately after and later when he gets home? He receives the memory of crashing on the sled. He feels the pain of a broken leg. When he got home, he still feels pain and sick from the crash and his leg still ached.
What wisdom does hunger provide? The wisdom to not overpopulate.
Why doesn’t everyone have the memories? Because everyone would be burdened and pained and the committee of elders doesn’t want the community to experience that.
What is the mood at the end of the talk? Why? Ominous because the rules will never change no matter what the Giver and Jonas want to change.
What is happening with one of the birthmothers? She is having twin boys.
What does Jonas’ father have to decide? He has to decide which twin to release.

How does Jonas calm Gabriel? Accidentally gives him a memory of a sail.
Why does Jonas decide not to confess giving away a memory? He feels he’s not qualified to be a Giver; Gabriel has not been chosen; it scares him.
What happened when Jonas arrived at training? The Giver was in a lot of pain.
What memory does Jonas receive? The pain of warfare.
Why does The Giver say, “Forgive me”? The Giver says this because he caused Jonas so much pain.
How does Jonas feel at the beginning of the chapter? He wanted his childhood again. He didn’t want the memories.
What is the Giver’s favorite memory? What does Jonas learn from it? The family with the tree and lights (Christmas); love.
Why are grandparents a new idea for Jonas? Because Jonas doesn’t have or know his grandparents.
What does the book’s society lose without grandparents? What do they gain? The society loses the feeling of family and love. They gain the fact that there are no problems or issues to deal with in regard to the grandparents.
What happens to Jonas and his parent’s relationship after Jonas leaves his parents’ house? Jonas gets his own dwelling; his parents will live with the Childless Adults.
What does he think about the family unit in his memory? He thought it was kind of nice.
What is Mother and Father’s response to Jonas’ question about loving him? How does he respond? He should be using precision of language. Jonas states he understands why it’s inappropriate, but Jonas lies.
What does Jonas tell Gabe in his sleep? There could be love.
What does Jonas do for the first time at the end of the chapter? He doesn’t take his pill.
Why does Jonas stop taking his daily pill? Because he wants to have feelings; he doesn’t want to live in the world of “no-feelings” any longer.
How is Gabe proceeding? He was a happy and easygoing toddler.
Why does Jonas interrupt his friends’ game of good guys and bad guys? After the tragic memories the Giver has given Jonas, he feels their attitude toward things like war and guns are very casual.
What was the story of Rosemary? She was selected to be the new Receiver. During her training, she was unable to handle the memories of pain and anguish. She applied for Release and the Elders had to grant it to her.
What happened to the memories transferred to Rosemary? How were the training rules changed as a result? When Rosemary was released, her memories were released to the community. They overwhelmed the community because they had never experienced feelings like that before.
Why does The Giver advise Jonas to stay away from the river? So the community doesn’t lose Jonas. If he was lost, like drowned, the memories of an entire year would be released to the community members.
What does Jonas learn about rule 3 from his training rules in this chapter? He can ask anyone anything. This means that if he wants to watch a release, all he has to do is ask.
How does The Giver feel about Rosemary’s release? He was very bitter. He watched the tape of the release and realized that Rosemary preferred to inject herself.
How does Lois Lowry describe Jonas’s feeling at the end of Chapter 19? “Jonas felt ripping sensation inside himself, the feeling of terrible pain clawing its way forward to emerge in a cry.” He is in terrible pain.
Why does Jonas refuse to go home? He’s upset because he found out that his father killed the twin and lied to him.
How does The Giver comfort Jonas? The Giver allows Jonas to stay the night at his house.
What is the plan Jonas and The Giver hatch? The plan is for Jonas to escape, the Giver will remain behind, tell everyone that Jonas drowned and the Giver will help the community cope with the memories that are released when Jonas leaves.
How did The Giver first experience seeing beyond? His was actually Hearing Beyond and he heard what he calls music.
What are the specifics of the escape plan? Will Jonas succeed in his escape? Jonas will hide his bike and clothes by the river. He will leave a note for his parents that he went for a bike ride. Since it’s the morning of the Ceremony of 12, the will be upset but will chastise him later.
What is the surprising revelation at the end of Chapter 20? Rosemary was the Giver’s daughter.
What makes Jonas’s escape plan fall apart? The fact that Gabriel is going to be released.
How does the first part of the escape proceed? Jonas sneaks out after the sky became dark and the community still. He is on his bicycles riding over the bridge. He took Gabriel with him so he would not be released.
How has the mood changed by the end of Chapter 21? Jonas is becoming more optimistic because the search planes are less frequent.

What new dangers does Jonas encounter in Chapter 22? Narrow, bumpy roads. This causes him to start riding in the daylight when he can see the road.
In which different ways does Jonas think about starvation? He remembers when he was just hungry and said he was starving. Now, he truly understands starving.
What weather conditions impede Jonas’s progress toward Elsewhere? The weather is cold and snowing and both Gabriel and Jonas are freezing. The snow makes it difficult for Jonas to ride the bicycle.
How do Jonas and Gabe finally get to safety? They ride the sled down the hill to the house with the red, blue and yellow lights on the tree.
What is the sensory image at the end of the book? Jonas hears people singing so the sensory image is hearing.
