Chemistry-Chapter8-Molecules in Action
Term | Definition |
---|---|
polar molecules | a molecule that has a negatively charged end and a positively charged end due to electronegativity differences between atoms and/or the asymmetry of its structure |
nonpolar molecules | a molecule that is not attracted to an electrical charge; each atom shares electrons equally or there is no net dipole in the molecule |
intermolecular force | a force of attraction that occurs between molecules |
polar covalent bond | a covalent bond that results in a negatively charged end and a positively charged end due to electronegativity differences between atoms and/or the asymmetry of its structure |
nonpolar covalent bond | a covalent bond in which each atom shares electrons equally or there is no net dipole in the molecule |
ionic bond | a type of chemical bond that is the result of the transfers of electrons from one atom to another, typically between metal and nonmetal atoms |
dipole | a molecule or covalent bond with a nonsymetrical distribution of electrical charge that makes the molecule or bond pair |
diatomic molecules | a molecule consisting of two atoms |
