Ethnocentric monoculturalism is? A powerful and dysfunctional system in society that also helps shape, influence and help determine the direction of counseling.
What is included in the definition of ethnocentric monoculturalism. Cultural Encapsulation and Cultural Racism
What do ethnocentric monoculturalism people believe? 1-Belief in superiority of one’s cultural group (e.g., history, values, language, traditions, etc.). 2-Belief in the inferiority of racial/ethnic minorities. 3- Belief in the power to impose standards and beliefs on less powerful groups
Ethnocentric monoculturalism thinking is manifested in? Programs, policies, practices and structures of institutions
Ethnocentric monoculturalism has? An invisible veil ...thus an assumption of universality ... That everyone shares a basic reality and truth
What are micro aggressions? Tend to be subtle, unintentional and indirect. Often occur in situations where there are alternative explanations. Represent unconscious and ingrained biased beliefs and attitudes
What do micro aggressions represent? Expressions of “ism” (e.g., racism, sexism, heterosexism, etc.) ideological beliefs and ethnocentric monoculturalism
Micro aggressions are more likely to occur when...? People pretend not to notice differences thereby saying that race, gender, sexual orientation had nothing to do with their actions.
What are the 3 forms of micro aggressions? 1- Microassaults 2- Microinsults 3- Microinvalidation
What are Microassaults? Blatant verbal, non-verbal and environmental attacks intended to convey discriminatory and biased sentiments
What are Microinsults? Unintentional behaviors or verbal comments that convey rudeness or insensitivity or demean a person’s racial heritage, gender or sexual orientation.
What are Microinvalidations? Verbal comments or behaviors that exclude, negate or dismiss the psychological thoughts, feelings and experiential realities of the target group
What do micro aggressions trigger? A dilemma ... “Did I just experience what I think I just experienced?” and “ I know I did but what can I really do about it” and “I know I did but who will take me seriously enough to help me do something about it?”
What is the result of micro aggressions? Alien in their own land Ascription of intelligence Color blindness Assumption of criminal status Use of sexist language Denial of “isms" Second class citizen Traditional gender role stereotyping Sexual objectification Assumptions of abnormality
What is the definition of White Privilege? infused into the fabric of American society... encompasses the benefits that are automatically accrued to Euro-Americans just on the basis of their skin color and Euro-Americans can’t give up the privilege or give it away
White Privilege is...? (a) bears no relationship to “good” or “bad” (b) is bestowed prenatally (c) is an institutional vs. personal set of beliefs (d) represents sets of experiences that Euro-Americans can count on in their daily existence
