When were south Asia's major landforms created? When the subcontinent broke off from Africa and drifted into Asia.
What is south Asia? A subcontinent of peninsulas bordered by mountains and oceans
What countries are included in the Indian subcontinent? India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, the Maldives.
Why is the Indian subcontinent called the Indian subcontinent? India dominates the region.
How big is the Indian subcontinent? It's half the size of the u.s. but the area has 1/5 of the world's people.
What separates the subcontinent from the rest of Asia? Natural barriers
List Some natural barriers. Mountains form northern border, Indian Ocean surrounds the rest of Arabian Sea to west, Bay of Bengal to east.
What was South Asia once a part of? East Africa
What are the Himalaya mountains? A 1,500 mile long system of parallel ranges.
What is the world's tallest mountain? Mt. Everest
What separates Pakistan and Afghanistan at the west end? Hindu Kush Mountains
What is one of the major land routes through the mountains? Khyber Pass
Where are the Karakorum Mountains located? in the northeastern part of the Himilayas
What are some southern plateaus? Vindhya Range in central India, Deccan Plateau of southern India Western and Eastern Ghats
How is the Northern Indian, or Indo-Gangetic Plains formed? by 3 river systems that originate in the Himalaya.
Where does the Indus River flow? west, then south through Pakistan to to the Arabian Sea
Where does the Ganges River flow? east across northern India
Where does Brahmaputra wind? east, then west, south through Bangladesh.
How populated are the fertile plains? Heavily populated, and has 3/5 of India's people
What are the area's big cities? New Delhi, Kolkata in India; Dakha in Bangladesh
What is Sri Lanka? The subcontinent's "Tear Drop"; Island in the Indian Ocean, off of India's southeastern tip; Tear-shaped country with lush tropical land.
What are the Maldives? They are an archipelago (an island group) of 1,200 small islands.
Where are the Maldives and where do they stretch? They stretch north to south for 500 miles; they are off the Indian coast and near the equator.
What are the islands of the Maldives called? atolls, which are low-lying tops of submerged volcanoes.
What is the total area of the Maldives? 115 square miles.
How many islands of the Maldives are inhabited? only 200 islands
What provides food through farming and fishing on the Maldives? Water and soil resources.
What is a severe problem in the region? Deforestation
What has devastated forests in India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka? Overcutting.
What do the climate conditions of South Asia range from? frigid cold in the high mountains to intense heat in the deserts.
What does seasonal winds affect? both the climate and vegetation of South Asia.
What are monsoons? seasonal winds that affect the entire region.
Where and when do dry winds blow from? they blow from the northeast during the months of October through February.
Where and when do moist ocean winds blow from? they blow from the southwest during the months of June through September.
What do the moist winds bring? heavy rainfall especially in the southwest and the Ganges Delta.
What is a cyclone it is a violent storm with fierce winds and heavy rain.
What do rivers play a central role in? the lives of South Asians.
What poses great challenges to South Asian countries? Water pollution and flooding.
What is the best-known South Asian river? Ganges
How far and where from does the Ganges river flow? It flows 1,500 miles from the Himalayan glacier to the Bay of Bengal.
How big is the drain area of the Ganges River and how big is it in terms of population? It's drain area is 3 times the size of France and is home to 350 million people.
What is the Ganges River known as? Gangamai, which is also known as "Mother Ganges"
What does the Ganges River become where it meets the Brahmaputra? It becomes the Padma.
What is the religion of most Indians? Hinduism
To Hindus, what is the Ganges River? the sacred home of the goddess Ganga.
What do the Hindus believe about the Ganges River? it has healing powers
What do the Pilgrims do at the Ganges River? They bathe and scatter ashes of the dead there.
What has centuries of use made the Ganges River? the most polluted river in the world.
What happened in 1986? The government plans sewage treatment plants and regulations.
Where does the Feni River flow? from the Chittagong Hills to the Bay of Bengal.
What does Bangladesh use its large population's unskilled workers for? to build a dam on the Feni River
What do the dump trucks do? They raise the clay dam to a height of 30 feet.
What does the dam hold against? cyclones and storm surges.
What country is the largest country in South Asia and has the most developed economy? India
What is India's culture infuenced deeply by? religion
When and where does Indian civilization begin? In the Indus Valley in 2500 B.C.
Who invades India in 1500 B.C.? Aryans from northern Iran.
What empire unites with India in 321 B.C.? The Mauryan Empire
What Empire ruled much of India by the early 1500s? The Muslim Mughal Empire.
In the 1500s, what people built cloth and traded spices with India? French, Dutch, and Portuguese people.
What people established a direct rule with India in 1857? British people
What is Raj? a 90-year period of direct British control and was opposed by most Indians.
When does India gain independence from Britain? in 1947
What was created under the 1st prime minister? a constitution
Who was the 1st prime minister? Jawaharial Nehru
What is India mostly? Hindu, but it has large Muslim, Sikh, and Tamil minorities.
How big is India's economy? large, but half its people live in poverty.
How many people in India farm? 2/3 of its people farm.
What percentage of farm families own 25% of India's farmland? 5%
What has been a major product for quite some time? Cotton textiles
What is India's most prosperous city? Mumbai (Bombay)
What do most Indians have? male-dominated, arranged marriages
What is eaten in curry dishes but is limited by religious beliefs? meat
What kinds of sports do Indians play? soccer, field hockey, and cricket.
Where are large film industries located? Mumbai
What is Indian's economy doing? changing.
What is the key to changing? education
What has risen steadily in slums and rural areas. Literacy rate
What is still low? school attendance and literacy rates.
How many major languages does the constitution recognize? 18 major languages.
India has over how many languages and dialects? over 1,000
What language is widely used by government business workers? English
What percentage of Indians are Hindu? 80%
What is reincarnation? It is the rebirth of the soul after death.
What do they use for burials? The original Aryan caste system of social classes.
Who are Brahmans? Priests, scholars: Yishcwisas -- rulers and warriors.
Who are Vaisyns? farmers, merchants: svilras -- artisans, laborers
What are Nadits and where are they? They are untouchables and are outside the caste system and are at the lowest status.
What is Dharma? It is a Caste's moral duty: only reincarnation changes caste.
What are India's other faiths? They are Jainism, Christianity, Sitchism, and Buddhism.
Where did Buddhism originate? in northern India.
How big is Islam in India? Islam is still strong in certain parts of India.
What religion is Pakistan and Bangladesh? Muslim
How are countries formed? They are formed as a result of the partition of British India.
