| antecedent | the word, phrase or clause referred to by a prounoun |
| antithesis | a figure of speech in which contrasting or paradoxical ideas are presented in parallel form |
| apostrophe | a figure of speech in which a speaker directly addresses an absent person or a personified quality, object or idea. It is often used in poetry and speeches to add emotional intensity. |
| assonance | the repetition of vowel sounds inside words. e.g. "the best gesture of my brain is less than your eyelids' flutter..." |
| author's purpose | the author's reason for creating a particular work; to entertain; to explain or inform; to express an opinion |
| ballad | a poem that tells a story and that is meant to be sung or recited. It is a narrative poem because it tells a story. |
| bathos | a figure of speech that involves a sudden drop from the important to the trivial. It is an abrupt, usually unintended transition from the exalted to the commonplace, producing an amusing effect. |
