Redox
Chemistry Unit 4
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Redox | The transfer of electrons |
| Fixed oxidation states | Some elements nearly always have the same oxidation state in their compounds. |
| Displacement reactions | A type of reaction where part of one reactant is replaced by another reactant. |
| Oxidation | The gain of oxygen. |
| Oxidation state (for number) | The loss of electrons. |
| Oxidation states in compound ions | The total oxidation state adds up to the charge. |
| Oxidising agents | accepts electrons from another reactant and is itself reduced. |
| Reducing agents | donates electrons to another reactant and is itself oxidised. |
| Reduction | The loss of oxygen. |
| Simples ions | The charge on ion. Ions in compounds where the other half is not given. |
| Reduction state (for number) | The gain of electrons. |
| Oxidation state for Reduction | Decrease |
| Oxidation state for Oxidation | Increase |
| Redox reaction | A reaction in which oxidation and reduction both take place. |
