| compost | a collection of biodegradable waste that is no longer used by people or which died on their own |
| consumption | the act of eating, using, or taking in |
| ecological footprint | a way of measuring how much of an impact a person or community has on the Earth |
| ecosystem | a community of plants, animals, water, and air that depend on each other for survival |
| fossil fuel | nonrenewable energy sources-coal, oil and natural gas-that formed in earth's crust over hundreds of millions of years |
| hazardous wastes | waste materials, such as pesticides and leftover paints that are harmful to human health or poisonous to living organisms |
| pollutant | substance that contaminates any part of the environment |
| recycling | conservation method that is a form of reuse and requires changing or reprocessing an item or natural resource |
| natural resources | part of Earth's environment that supplies materials useful or necessary for the survival of living organisms |
| nonrenewable energy | energy that comes from sources that either can be used up or do not replace themselves |
| renewable energy | energy sources which can be used over and over again without running out |
