Medieval Health, Black Plague, Medieval Church

| What were the symptoms of the Black Plague? | boils (buboes), vomiting, headaches, fever, spitting up blood, black spots from internal bleeding, Central Nervous System problems, Lymphatic System problems. |
| Where did the Black Plague originate, when did it occur, and who were the carriers, and how many people died? | Central Asia, 1320s - 1400, fleas and black rats, approximately 75 million. |
| Why did the Medieval Church have so much power? | Owned large amounts of land, got peasants to work it for free, controlled people through sermons based on Purgatory and Hell, fear, lots of money from tithes and indulgences, and the Church wasn't controlled by the King, but by the Pope. |
| What kind of plague was the Black Death? | Bubonic Plague |
| Pilgrimage | Long spiritual journey that includes growth of the outer and inner self. People would make these journeys to Holy sites or shrines of their religion. Once reaching the Holy site, PILGRIMS hoped for miracles and salvation from sins. |
| What were real Medieval diseases and how could you get them? | Scurvy, Typhoid Fever, Pneumonia, Leprosy, Black Plague, and various sin diseases. You could get them from poor hygiene, diet, and dirty water. |
| How did you become a doctor in Medieval times and who could be a doctor? | People went to school for five years and took two exams to become a doctor. Mostly barbers and butchers could double as doctors because of their hand control, fine motor control, and knowledge of anatomy. But, almost anyone could be a doctor. |
| What were some remedies for diseases? | Isolation, bleeding, leeches, surgery, folk cures and poultices, herbal remedies, the CHURCH...if all else failed. There were also wacky ideas like chewing gemstones, shaving chickens, and lancing boils. |
| What was the roll of the Church in Medieval times? | The church would give shocking sermons that would scare parishioners of Hell and Purgatory. However, the Church also served as a meeting and social place, school, library, hospital, shelter, etc. |
| Effects of the Plague | Killed 1/3 of the population of England, taxes were raised, Churches shut down, many crops failed, labourers were in high demand, Feudal System collapsed. |
