| Term | Definition |

| genre | category of passages (fiction/nonfiction) Each style has a particular style, form, and content. |
| resolution | In a story with conflict/problem, it is the solution to the problem or the end of a dramatic conflict. |
| writing process | prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, proofreading and publishing are steps to create a written work |
| formatting | the way a piece of writing is organized; for example, headings and subheadings could be used |
| transition | word, phrase or clause that links one idea to the next. Examples: "in summary," "for example," or "as has been noted," or "for this reason." |
| root | foundation of a word (example: if you know what a "school" is, then you might know that a "scholar" is a person that wants knowledge |
| context | words or phrases that surround another phrase and help explain its meaning |
| analogy | comparison of two things that are somehow alike and identifying the relationship (For example, just like soldiers use weapons, writers use pens) |
| demonstrate | to show clearly |
| precise | exactly defined/stated; definite |
| bias | a strong inclination of the mind or a preconceived opinion about something or someone; prejudice that may be favorable or unfavorable; in favor of or against an idea. |
