Ch 5 7 Deadly Sins

any action that alienates or cuts us off from ourselves, others, and God sin
state of sinfulness into which all human beings are born, inherited from the first humans, erased by the sacrament of Baptism original sin

less serious offense, weakens our relationship with God, but does not cut us off, can be forgiven trough any sacrament, as long, as there is true sorrow for one's sin venial sin
individual act of wrongdoing such as stealing, missing Mass, taking God's name in vain personal sin
wrongdoing of an entire community, ususlly against the common good such as homelessness, Wall Street greed, genocide, racism social sin
doing something sinful, an action sins of commission
not doing something you could have done, usually for soneone's good, a lack of action such as Good Samaritan story or passing by a homeless person without offering to help in some way sins of omission
excessive sexual thoughts, can lead to rape, sexual abuse, stalking, prostitution, porn, lust
overindulgence to the point of waste, can lead to hunger of others, misuse of resources gluttony
excessive desire of what another has, can lead to jealousy, stealing envy
excessive indifference, failure to act, can lead to sins of omission sloth
excessive acquisition of wealth, can lead to poverty of others, economic troubles greed
excessive love of self, can lead to all the other sins, worst of the 7 dealy sins pride
uncontrolled anger or hatred, can lead to rage, physical abuse, murder wrath
made us aware of and openly challenged the social sins of their leaders examples are John the Baptist, Jesus, MLK Jr, Elie Wiesel, Mother Teresa prophets
anti-Semitism, Anti-Islamism, sexual abuse, cover-up of abuse social sin in the Church
slavery, sexism, racism, homophobia, classism, bullying social sin in the U.S.
countered by Chastity lust

countered by Charity greed
countered by diligence sloth
countered by patience wrath
countered by kindness envy
countered by humility pride
