alter (p. 1) A table or raised platform used for offering gifts, prayers and candles to god or ancestors.
incense (p. 1) A substance that is burned to produce a perfume or aroma.
teetered (p. 2) To stand unsteadily, almost tipping over.
silver ( p. 5) A small, narrow pieced of something.
Suspiciously (p. 7) To do something in a way that makes someone think you are doing something wrong.
pueblo (p. 18) A type of town, usually found in the deserts of Mexico and the Southwestern United States, where people built houses of adobe into the mountain sides.
plaza (p. 19) A public square or open place in a city or town
bodega (p. 20) A grocery store, usually where Latin American items can be bought.
trowel (p. 21) A small, pointed shovel used for planting and gardening
trough (p. 22) A long depression or hole in the ground, usually used for planting or watering when gardening.
goldenrod (p. 23 ) A type of plant with a very bright yellow flower
compromised (p. 32) When people each give up something in order to reach an agreement
spigot (p. 32) A spout or faucet that gives water.
coolies (p. 33) An insulting name for an unskilled worker from an Asian country
achievement (p. 35) Something that has been accomplished
electrocuted (p. 37) Killed by electricity
strictest (p. 40) Someone who always follows the rules and makes sure others do too.
wilt (p. 43) To shrivel and die, needing water
passengers (p. 43) Any person traveling in a car, train or plane

blight (p. 54) A disease that kills plants
gales (p. 54) Very strong winds
obliged (p. 60) To do something that someone wants to be kind

pantomime (p. 64) Communicating with motions instead of speech
