What is realistic fiction? Realistic fiction are stories that have characters and events that are like people and events in real life.
What is historical fiction? Historical fiction is a story with real life characters and the events take place in the past.
How do illustration enhance a story? They show some of the action. They also show some of the beauty and emotions of the story.
What caused Mr. Kang to change his mind about his hua mei? When his grandson Sam says, "I would fly out if I were a bird". He said this at the park. He realized the bird was not free.
What was the effect of Mr Kang changing his mind? He lets the bird out at the park and the bird flies away. But they later find him waiting in the apartment.
How do you know Mr Kang thinks the hua mei should be freed? He says that America is the land of the free.
What is special about Mr. Kang's birthday? He said he became a free man on his birthday. He no longer cooks noodles everyday at the restaurant. He starts a new life. He feels free. He reads, writes poems, drinks tea, eats almond cakes and does many other things that he enjoys.
What does Mr. Kang do during the days after his birthday? Mr Kang reads the NY Times, drinks tea and eats sweet almond cake. He paints a poem with and hang it up. He cleans the cage and his bird. He feeds hua mei food from a special recipe. He reads his peoms to the bird. Sam visits on Sat. and he goes to the pa

What did Mr Kang want to do with this bird? Keep him in a cage and take him to the Sara Delano Roosevelt park on Sundays.
When does Mr Kang feel locked up in a cage? When he was at his restaurant cooking noodles for fifty years!
How does Mrs Kang feel about releasing the bird? She thinks its a mistake because she tells Mr Kang to remember his three birthday wishes.
What does it mean to infer? To make a decision based on details and facts you already know.
What is an abbreviation? The shortened form of a word that usually begins with a capital letter (ex: Doctor is Dr., Sunday is Sun).
How do you write an initial for a name? Use the first letter of a name and a period (ex: S. Wang).
