What does Monarch mean? a single ruler who holds all power in a country or empire
What does Assembly mean? a group of citizens in an ancient Greek democracy with the power to pass laws
What does Tyrant mean? a person who seizes power illegally
What does Aristocrat mean? a member of the most powerful class in Greek society
What does Oligarch mean? one or several people who rule a country or empire together, sharing hands
What does citizen mean? a member of democracy, who has certain rights and responsibilities
What does Monarchy mean? a form of government in which the ruling power is in the hands of one person
What does Tyranny mean? a form of government in which the ruling power is in the hands of one person who is not a lawful king
What does Democracy mean? a form of government in which the ruling power is shared by all citizens
What does Oligarchy mean? a form of government in which the power is in the hands of a few people
Who has power in Monarchy? The king or the emperor (one person rules) has all of the power.
How was power attained in Monarchy? Power was inherited and passed down from generation to generation.
How were decisions made in a Monarchy? The king makes all of the decisions but is sometimes advised by aristocrats.
How was power lost in a Monarchy? The king lost his power when he was overthrown by the aristocrats because he kept relying on them for money and giving them more and more power to the point where they had more power than him.
Who has power in an Oligarchy? Usually a few/multiple aristocrats (the wealthy) share the power equally
How wad power attained in Oligarchy? They overthrew the Monarchy.
How were decisions made? The aristocrats made the laws and used their army to enforce the laws. Most laws were used to benefit the wealthy people.
How was power lost in Oligarchy? The poor people (biggest group) turned to their military people and used force to end the Oligarchy because they only made laws that benefited the wealthy.
Who has power in Tyranny? One person has power but they are not lawfully the king.
How was power attained in Tyranny? Power was attained by force.
How were decisions made in Tyranny? They listen to their supporters (the people) but still make the decision themselves (they don't have to listen to them).
How was power lost in Tyranny? They were forced out by the people because they were ruling too harshly so the people pushed him out.
Who has power in Democracy? The citizens have all of the power (free white men over the age of 18).
How was power attained in Democracy? The citizens overthrew the Tyrant and decided they should rule themselves.
How were decisions made in Democracy? The citizens voted on different political issues.
How was power lost in a Democracy? Power was lost because of problems making decisions, they changed back to earlier forms of government.
What is the strength of Monarchy? The power was passed on legally.
What is the weakness of Monarchy? The king relied on the Aristocrats for money. They demanded more power. They soon had so much power so they overthrew the king. One person made all of the decisions.
What is the strength of Oligarchy? The power was in the hands of a small group.
What is the weakness of Oligarchy? The laws only protected and benefited the wealthy only.
What is the strength of the Tyranny? The needs of the middle class were met.
What is the weakness of the Tyranny? The power was attained by force and they usually ruled very harshly.
What is the strength of the Democracy? The citizens are able to vote on what they want to happen.
What is the weakness of the Democracy? The decisions that are made can be quickly overturned and changed.
