adipocere if the body is in a hot, moist location, a soapy appearance
algor mortis refers to the postmortem cooling process of the body and can be extremely helpful in homicide investigations.
asphyxiation results when the body tissues and the brain receive insufficient oxygen to support the red blood cells
autoerotic asphyxiation the victim has sought to intensify sexual gratification by placing a rope or other ligature around the neck and causing just enough construction to create hypoxia, or a deficiency of oxygen in the bloodstream that results in semiconsciousness
cadaveric spasm a condition that occurs in specific muscle groups rather than the entire body.
criminal homicide is subdivided into murder and manslaughter , both of which are further subdivided
criminal negligence acts of commission create creating situations resulting in unreasonable risk of death or great bodily harm
defense wounds nonfatal wounds incurred by victims as they attempt to ward off attackers. Indicative of murder.

lust murder is a sex related homicide involving a sadistic, deviant assault
malicious intent an element of first band second degree murder , implies ill will, wickedness, or cruelty
manslaughter is the unlawful killing of another person with no prior malice
mass murder when multiple victims are killed in a single incident by one or a few suspects
mummification Complete dehydration of all body tissues
murder is the most severe statutory crime , one of the few for which the penalty can be life imprisonment or death.
noncriminal homicide is subdivided into excusable and justifiable homicide
postmortem lividity purple discoloration of the body
predation an intentional act of selecting, pursuing , and over powering a person and then inflicting harm on that person for the pleasure of the predator
premeditation advanced planning
rigor mortis is a stiffening of the body after death due to partial skeletal muscle contraction
second degree murder the intent to cause death , but not premeditation.
serial murder is the killing of three or more separate victims , with a "cooling off"period between the killings
suicide the intentional taking of one's own life
suicide by police a person decides he or she wants to die but does not want to pull the trigger these people take the option of forcing a police officer to do it for them
third degree murder involves neither premeditation nor intent
toxicology the study of poison
voluntary manslaughter the intentional causing of the death of another person in the heat of passion
