How does Miller characterize Parris? How does Parris feel about his parishoners? Miller characterizes Parris as a man whose main concern is his reputation and status in the community, rather than the well-being of his daughter. Parris showed an obsession.
Why is Thomas Putnam willing to speak of witchcraft? How does Mrs. Putnam know that Ruth was doing in the woods? It gives Putnam an opportunity to exact revenge against others. She asked Ruth to go to Tituba to raise her children from the dead.
Why does Abigail "admit" that Tituba and Ruth were conjuring spirits? Why is Abigail afraid the others will confess what they were doing in the woods? How does Abigail treat the other girls? How does she treat her uncle? She is scared that the other girls will confess what was truly going on in the woods. She admits that Tituba and Ruth were conjuring spirits. Abigail treats the girls badly, and treats her uncle with respect.

Why doesn't Proctor go to Salem to report what Abigail has told him? Why does Elizabeth want him to go? Why does Elizabeth mistrust him? Proctor doesn't have any proof of the affair and no witnesses were around. She wants him to be honest and tell the truth. He had an affair with Abigail and got caught.
How does Proctor feel about the court and Mary Warren's part in the proceeding's How has Mary Warren changed? He thinks the court is ridiculous and he doesn’t like Mary Warren being involved. Mary Warren had become less shy/more eccentric.
How has Hale changed since his arrival in Salem? Why is he testing Proctor and Elizabeth? Why hasn't Proctor been in church? Hale has started feeling guiltier. He’s testing Proctor and Elizabeth because he thinks what they know will lead to the truth. Proctor hasn’t been to church because he believes Parris is a hypocrite and doesn’t like how he said the candlesticks to Gold.
Why is Cheever looking for a poppet? What is the significance of the one they find? It is a sign of voodoo. It was evidence of witchcraft that Mary went to give to Elizabeth at a peace offering.
Hale says: "Mary-you charge a cold and cruel murder on Abigail." What does he mean? That she has accused Abigail of stabbing herself and she was faking everything.
Why does Proctor insist that Mary Warren testify in Elizabeth's defense? Why does Mary Warren refuse? Mary Warren works for them and Mary Warren gave the poppet to Elizabeth. Mary Warren refuses because she is scared of Abigail.
Why is Giles Cory expelled from Court? Why won't Danforth hear his evidence? Why is Cory arrested? He was refusing to reveal the name in court. He refuses to hear the evidence unless Giles reveals the name of the person.
Why is Mary Warren in court? What does she tell Danforth? Why is Danforth suspicious of her and of Proctor? Why does Proctor remind her of the angel Raphael? Proctor needs her to tell the court the truth and free his wife. She tells Danforth that she was lying and that all the other girls were lying to. He thinks that Proctor is threatening Mary into his confession. He tells her that God damns all liars.
How does Parris nullify Proctor's testament? How is Giles deposition turned against him? He calls Proctor a bad christian and telling the court how he doesn't go to church and even works on Sunday, Sabbath Day. He is unwilling to betray anyone else.
What is the professed purpose of the court? Why doesn't the court need witnesses? What does this suggest about his proceedings? The purpose is Justice and getting rid of Salem of the Devil and his sin. God was the only true witness. Anyone can be accused by only person of witchcraft, whether if they witness them or not.
Why does Proctor confess lechery? Why does he think Danforth and Hathorne will believe his confession? Why don't they believe him? He wants to save his wife from being accused of doing witchcraft. He thinks they will believe him, because his wife is a good woman. Danforth doesn't trust Proctors word.
How is Elizabeth's testimony used against Proctor? Why is this an unfair test of Elizabeth's word against John's? She knows lechery is a grave sin, but she knows that her husband is remorseful. It is unfair, because she doesn't know that John confessed his sin, and lying for him, in essence, condemning him. She is trying to protect her husband from death.
How does Abigail turn the court against Mary Warren? Abigail was fearing retribution from Danforth, claiming to see. Spirits in the courtroom.
Why does Hale denounce the proceedings? What should have been the effect of his denunciation? Why is it not? He is feeling guilt, because of his death warrants. The courts are not delivering due to Justice.
What is the effect of Sarah Good's and Tituba's talk about flying South? Why does Miller include it? Miller includes it for comedy as well as both Sarah Good and Tituba are two of the only admirable characters left. If they leave it shows how bad things are.
How has Parris changed? Why doesn't the news that Abigail and Mercy have left town affect the decision of the court? How is Danforth a victim of his own logic? Parris has become more passive. The news that Abigail and Mercy have left does not affect the trial for the same reason that Hale’s denunciation does not change things. Danforth is a victim of his own logic because he constantly relies on the witnesses.
Why has Hale returned? How has he changed? Why has he changed? Hale returns because there was no need for him in Andover. He has changed because he now disagrees with the court and wants to help save people, particularly the Proctor’s. He has changed because he sees the fallacies in the court proceedings.
Why does Danforth allow Elizabeth to speak to John Proctor? How has she changed toward her husband? Why doesn't she take Hale's advice? Danforth allows Elizabeth to speak to John because he hopes she will get him to confess. She has changed towards him. She does not take Hale’s advice because she wants John to do what he thinks is right.
How and why does Giles die? Why wasn't he hanged? Giles dies by pressing because he would not confess yes or no, he just replies, “More weight.” He wasn’t hanged because he was not convicted.
Why does Proctor confess? Why will he not name names? Why will he not let Danforth have his signed paper? Proctor confesses because he thinks it is the right thing to do. He will not name names because he does not want to implicate anyone else. He will not let Danforth have his signed paper because he wants to keep his good name.
Why does John Proctor choose to hang? Why does he thereby accomplish? John Proctor chooses to hang because he thinks it is the most honorable thing to do. He also feels terrible about what he did to Elizabeth and she does not give him any reason to think there is something to live for.
