What is the first step to adding an amendment to the Constitution? The amendment must be proposed.
How can an amendment be proposed? 2 ways- Both involve 2/3! 1.) 2/3 vote in congress (house and senate) or 2.) a national convention including 2/3 of all states
What is the second step to adding an amendment to the Constitution? The amendment must be ratified.
How can an amendment be ratified? 2 ways- Both involve 3/4! 1.) 3/4 of state legislatures can vote for it or 2.) 3/4 of states can hold ratifying conventions that approve the amendment.
What amendments involve maintaining a representative democracy? Any amendment that involves the public being able to vote for, or choose, government representatives. ( 12, 13, 15, 17, 19, 23, 24, 26)
What is the purpose of the Bill of Rights? The purpose of the Bill of Rights is to protect individual freedoms.
Which amendments expand voting rights? 15th, 19th, 23rd, 24th, 26th
Name the amendment that protects your rights in this situation. You can't be sent to prison for 20 years for stealing a candy bar. 8th amendment- No cruel or unusual punishment
Name the amendment that protects your rights in this situation. You can stand outside the capital building with a bunch of friends and protest against a new law. 1st amendment- Freedom of religion, assembly, press, petition, and speech (RAPPS)
