| Rhyme Scheme | the pattern of rhymes in a poem |
| Internal Rhyme | rhyme at the end of a line of verse |
| End Rhyme | rhyme within a single line of verse |
| Meter | the pattern of syllables in a poem |
| List 3 poem styles | haiku, sonnet, ode, epic, free verse |
| How is a theme different from a topic? | The theme is the central message of a poem (or a story). The theme does not just state a topic, but says something about a topic. |
| Mood | the feeling that the reader gets from the poem. |
| Tone | the attitude the author has toward their subject |
| Metaphor | compares two unlike things in order to make you think. Does not use “like” or “as” |
| Personification | giving an object human characteristics |
| Oxymoron | using two words with opposite meanings to emphasize something |
| Hyperbole | exaggeration |
| Allusion | referencing another work, often the Bible or Greek Mythology |
| Pun | a statement that plays on two different meanings of the same word |
| Alliteration | repetition of initial consonant sounds |
| Assonance | repetition of internal vowel sounds |
| Onomatopeia | words that sound like what they mean |
| Euphony | pleasant sounds |
| Cacophony | unpleasant sounds |
| What does Carpe Diem mean? | Seize the day |
| Who wrote “Oh Captain My Captain”? | Walt Whitman |
| The Dead Poets opened their meetings with a quote from whom? | Thoreau |
