| Depressant | a drug that slows brain and body reactions |
| Intoxication | state in which a person's mental and physical abilities are impaired by alcohol or another substance |
| Black out | period of time that a drinker cannot recall |
| Blood Alcohol Concentration | the amount of alcohol in a person's blood expressed as a percentage |
| Hangover | term used to describe the effects of drinking too much alcohol |
| Driving While Intoxicated | a driver over 21 caught driving with a BAC over the legal limit of 0.08 |
| Overdose | taking an excessive amount of a drug that leads to a coma or death |
| Binge Drinking | the consumption of excessive amounts of alcohol at one sitting |
| Fetal Alcohol Syndrome | a group of birth defects caused by the effects of alcohol on an unborn child |
| Cirrhosis | as a result of heavy drinking liver cells die leaving scar tissue which can cause liver failure and death |
| Alcoholism | a disease people who can no longer control their use of alcohol suffer from |
| Tolerance | the effects of alcohol becoming reduced |
| Dependence | a chemical need for alcohol and not being able to function without it |
| Addiction | no longer having control over your drinking |
| Reverse Tolerance | condition in which less and less alcohol causes intoxication |
| Detoxification | removing all alcohol from a person's body |
| Withdrawal | a group of symptoms that occur when a dependent person stops taking a drug |
| Rehabilitation | process of learning to cope with everyday living without alcohol |
