Purposes of Writing
A stack of purposes of writing & examples
| Term | Definition |

| Entertain | A light-hearted piece of writing about a funny incident intended to make the reader laugh. |
| Describe | A piece of writing about what something is like, e.g. a person, place or experience. Biographies and travel writing are often this kind of writing. |
| Inform | A leaflet telling people about a new restaurant opening in your village. |
| Instruct | A recipe for how to bake chocolate chip cookies. |
| Advise | An email suggesting a friend should go and see their doctor to check out why they feel unwell. |
| Argue | A newspaper article in which a writer gives both points of view but supports one side of the debate, e.g. to build some new houses in your village. |
| Persuade | A letter to your headteacher trying to convince him/her to let you have a non-uniform day or to visit somewhere exciting on a school trip. |
| Explain | An account of how an accident happened. |
