Purposes of Writing

A stack of purposes of writing & examples

TermDefinition
Entertain A light-hearted piece of writing about a funny incident intended to make the reader laugh.
Describe A piece of writing about what something is like, e.g. a person, place or experience. Biographies and travel writing are often this kind of writing.
Inform A leaflet telling people about a new restaurant opening in your village.
Instruct A recipe for how to bake chocolate chip cookies.
Advise An email suggesting a friend should go and see their doctor to check out why they feel unwell.
Argue A newspaper article in which a writer gives both points of view but supports one side of the debate, e.g. to build some new houses in your village.
Persuade A letter to your headteacher trying to convince him/her to let you have a non-uniform day or to visit somewhere exciting on a school trip.
Explain An account of how an accident happened.
