Flashcards for a geo test
Question | Answer |
---|---|
What is Weather? | Weather is what the temperature and precipitation and wind conditions are for a particular amount of time |
What is Climate? | Climate is the pattern of weather that is expected from year to year. It changes during different seasons, but depends on location. |
How can climate influence what we eat? | Climate affects what we eat because the food we eat comes from different seasons. |
How can climate influence what we wear? | When the climate changes, our clothing changes. |
How can climate influence how we build shelter? | We build shelters that are well-suited for the climate. |
What is Climate change? | Climate change is when the patterns of weather we expect in areas change |
What is Global Warming? | Global warming is when our atmosphere increases in temperature |
Explain how a rise in average global temperature can affect food? | If areas get warmer or cooler it could lead to less food supply and foods in warmer climates forming pest asides. |
Explain how a rise in average global temperature can affect water? | If the temperature gets cooler the water could freeze and lead to less supply of it, also if the temperature gets warmer it could lead to floods as the ice melts. |
Explain how a rise in average global temperature can affect the natural environment? | The environment would have droughts, floods, less oxygen as plants could die, and more pollution. |
Explain how a rise in average global temperature can affect human health? | If it gets really warm we cloud get skin cancer, heat flashes, also if it gets cold we could get frost byte. |
Explain how a rise in average global temperature can affect extreme weather? | Due to the heat, the climate will change very drastically. More storms will arrive such as hurricane and tornadoes. |
Does climate change affect everyone in the same way? | No, as there could be different temratuures |
Explain how climate change has affected the lives of people living in Australia? | Settlers would build houses against the Murray river to get water, they also over used the water which lead to droughts and killed things do to dehydration. In Queensland it rained a lot and lead to floods, this happend sice the water got warmer, evapratie |
How is Australia’s coal use related to rising temperatures and changes in rainfall? | Australia’s coal use is related to the rising in temperatures and changes to rainfall, because the pollution (of greenhouse gases) is affecting the clouds carrying water above them. |
What are the three main ways we describe weather? | wind, precipitation, temperature |
What are the 5 parts of the Global Climate System? | Earth’s Surface, Atmosphere, Earth’s water, Earth’s Ice, and Life on Earth. |
What powers the climate on Earth? | The Sun provides the power on earth. |
What are the two main pieces of data on a climate graph? | Temperature and precipitation |
How do you calculate average annual temperature? | Add all of the average monthly temperatures, then divide by twelve |
How do you determine the temperature range? | Subtract the lowest monthly temperature from the highest monthly temperature |
How do you determine the total annual precipitation? | Add all of the amounts of monthly precipitation |
How do you determine the precipitation pattern? | Identify the precipitation pattern by looking at when most of the city’s precipitation happens. (Winter Max, Summer Max, Evenly Distributed) |
What are the nine world climate regions? | Tropical, Savannah, Steppe, Desert, Mild, Continental, Subarctic, Polar and Mountainous. |
What are Climate Factors/LOWERN? | Winds, Ocean currents and air masses Relief, Bodies of water and Elevation |
What are Climate Factors/LOWERN? are local? | Relief, Bodies of water and Elevation |
What are Climate Factors/LOWERN? are global? | Winds, Ocean currents and air masses |
Define ‘prevailing wind’? | Prevailing winds are the usual and common wind of a particular place |
Difine trade wind? | Trade winds are winds that are steadily blowing towards the equator |
Which hemisphere contains more land, Northern or Southern? | North does |
How does the north having more land and southern having less affect wind? | Since the north has more mountains the winds could go on them and change direction or strength as if you where in the southern where its mostly flat so the wind goes as normal but is warm due to the climate and temperature. |
Define ‘air mass’? | Air masses are large bodies of air that is usually around a specific area and has a lot of different variations |
. Explain elevation affects the climate.? | When wind is at a high elevation its particles separate and allow the suns heat to pass and makes it warmer but when wind is at a lower elevations it is more dense and dose not allow the suns hat to pass which makes it cooler. |
What is relief? | Different types of elevation. |
What is precipitation? | Precipitation is any type of water that forms in the Earth's atmosphere and then drops onto the surface of the Earth |
Explain how relief affects precipitation? | If you have a moist wind blowing over a mountain region, the moisture will go to the windward side and it will be dry on the leeward side |
How does living near bodies of water affect the climate? | Its because when you live near a big bodies of water you will have warmer climate since large bodies of water act as heat sinks and store heat |
How can volcanoes cause climate change? | Volcanoes can affect climate when they erupt, which causes a lot of ashes and which blokes out the sun, and when the sun gets blocked out for a long period of time, it starts to get cold |
How can the Sun’s activity affect climate? | It affects the climate because if it gets to hot the climate gets warmer and if it moves back it gets colder |
How can the tilt of the Earth affect climate? | when one hemisfire is tilted away from the sun it winter and where it is facing the sun its summer |
What are three gases that cause the greenhouse effect? | Carbon dioxide, Water vapor, Methane, |
List, in order from greatest to least, six sources of greenhouse gases caused by human activity? | Carbon dioxide, Carbon dioxide forestry and other land uses, Methane, Nitrous oxide and F gase. |
What is the difference between mitigation and adaptation when we take action to fight climate change? | Mitigation is when we try to fix the problem. For example, if there was graffiti on your door, you will do everything you can to clean it. Adaptation is when you are getting used to the problem. Instead of trying to clean off the graffiti, you would just |
