| Great Wall of China | A barrier made of walls across China’s northern frontier during the Qin Dynasty |
| aristocrats | Rich landowner or nobles |
| ancestors | a person that someone is descended from; a relative who lived in the past |
| pictographs | a symbol in a writing system based on pictures |
| Mandate of Heaven | Belief that the Chinese king’s right to rule came from the gods |
| Confucianism | Philosophy based on duty, morality, family order social harmony & government; follows the "Golden Rule" |
| Shi Huangdi | Chinese emperor who founded Qin dynasty, unified China with standardized writing, money; his tomb contained “clay army” |
| Silk Road | A network of trade routes that stretched across Asia from China to Mediterranean Sea |
| currency | something, such as coins or paper money, that is used as a medium of exchange; money in the form of coins or paper |
| oracle bones | used by people of the Shang Dynasty to predict future events based upon the cracks made while heating them |
| Huang/Yellow River | Also called "China's Sorrow" due to the lives lost from its floods; China's earliest civilization grew along this river. |
| Yangtze River | an important waterway for trade and transportation |
| dynasty | a line of rulers from one family |
| Buddhism | the most practiced religion of China |
| philosophy | the study of the basic ideas about society, education, and right and wrong; basic beliefs, concepts, and attitudes |
| civil service | the administrative service of a government |
| Daoism | a Chinese philosophy that teaches that people should turn away from worldy affairs and live in harmony with nature |
| loess | a fine, yellow powdery silt that helps the area around the Huang River to be fertile, but also sometimes clogs canals and tributaries |
| Chang Jiang (Yangtze River) | a major river in southeast China |
| Huang He (Yellow) River | a major river in northeast China |
| silk | a soft, luxurious fabric made from silkworms that originated from China |
| calligraphy | artistic writing from China |
| standardize | to make things consistent (weight, money, language, etc.) |
| Qin Shi Huangdi | a Chinese emperor who founded the Qin Dynasty. He standardized writing and money. His people created the terracotta army. |
